When Should You See a Doctor About GI Issues

If you are experiencing unusual pain or discomfort in your digestive tract, it’s best not to ignore the symptoms. If left untreated, some GI conditions may worsen or even become life-threatening.

You should see a gastroenterologist if:

  • You are having trouble swallowing
  • Heartburn has become a frequent problem
  • Painful bloating occurs suddenly without explanation and is accompanied by bloody stools, nausea, or painful bowel movements
  • Constipation occurs two or three times over three months
  • Diarrhea lasts more than a couple of weeks
  • You are suddenly losing weight without trying
  • You experience rectal bleeding or black and bloody stool
  • Excessive gas is unresponsive to over-the-counter medications
  • Your stool is light-colored for an extended period
  • You’ve noticed any yellowing of your skin and eyes
  • You experience an intense burning sensation in your upper abdomen when you take medication like aspirin or drink an acidic beverage such as alcohol or juice
  • You feel full too soon while you're eating
