MCC Hosts Virtual Dementia Tour
On Thursday September 22, Mitchell Convalescent Center hosted a Virtual Dementia Tour (VDT) for the long-term care facility’s staff. Funded by a grant from the Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services, the VDT is a comprehensive education program that provides staff hands-on, in-depth training specific to caring for patients with dementia.
During the Virtual Dementia Tour experience, trained facilitators guided participants through common everyday tasks and exercises while outfitted with patented devices that alter their senses.
Around 60 healthcare providers took the tour, and experienced first-hand the physical and mental challenges those with dementia face.
“It’s important to remember that dementia doesn’t just affect the patient,” said Jamie Womack, administrator of Archbold’s Mitchell County Hospital and Mitchell Convalescent Center. “Dementia can also impact family members and those caring for the patients. The training provided our staff a better understanding of dementia, and it allowed them to experience firsthand the frustrations and difficulties that many of our patients are faced with daily.”
