First of Its Kind Treatment of Coronary and Vascular Calcium Available at Archbold

Archbold now offers a new, innovative therapy for the treatment of advanced heart disease and other arterial calcifications. The treatment allows physicians to modify calcified plaque that restricts blood flow safely.

“Shockwave is a new technology that we are super excited to have here at Archbold,” said Cardiovascular Consultants of South Georgia Interventional Cardiologist, Clay Sizemore, MD, FACC, FSCAI. “When Shockwave came along as an alternative therapy for calcified disease it really brought a huge advance to what we provide to our patients.”

Heart disease is the leading cause of death for both men and women. Each year, more than 600,000 people in the United States die of the condition. Physicians often use stents to open an artery. Approximately one million patients undergo a stent procedure each year. Calcium can make the artery rigid, making it more difficult to treat, resulting in complications for some patients undergoing stent procedures.

Shockwave allows physicians to safely fracture problematic calcium - using sonic pressure waves - so that the artery can be expanded. Blood flow is then restored with the placement of a stent and without unnecessary complications.

Shockwave is also being used to treat calcium across multiple peripheral vessels, such as the legs. Shockwave is able to safely modify the calcium while significantly reducing the risk of complications to make procedures more predictable and efficient.

“Here at Archbold we are trying to stay very close to the cutting edge of medicine. We are a small town but have an amazing hospital where we are able to offer advanced technology to the southwest Georgia region,” said VITA Interventional Radiologist Tim Daniel, MD.

Dr. Sizemore successfully treated his first patient by addressing problematic calcium in the coronary arteries. Dr. Daniel was able to successfully perform his first case that addressed calcium in the arteries of the legs. They are the first in the region to successfully treat patients with Shockwave therapy.
