Archbold Receives Bariatric Comprehensive Center Accreditation

Archbold Memorial Hospital’s Bariatric and Weight Management Program has received Comprehensive Center accreditation from the Metabolic and Bariatric Surgery Accreditation and Quality Improvement Program® (MBSAQIP®).

The MBSAQIP is a joint quality program of the American College of Surgeons and the American Society for Metabolic and Bariatric Surgery.

The Archbold program reflects collaboration between the surgeons and staff of Archbold’s South Georgia Surgical Associates and various departments within Archbold Memorial Hospital. To earn MBSAQIP accreditation, the Archbold team met essential criteria for staffing, training, facility infrastructure and patient care pathways, ensuring its ability to support patients with obesity. The center also participates in a national data registry that yields semiannual reports on the quality of its surgical outcomes and identifying opportunities for quality improvement.

MBSAQIP accredited centers offer preoperative and postoperative care designed specifically for patients with obesity.

“Our patients are our top priority,” said Katie Hanisee, MD, bariatric program medical director and board-certified general and bariatric surgeon at Archbold Memorial Hospital. “Our goal in the Bariatric and Weight Management Program is to increase patients’ quality of life by improving or resolving obesity-related conditions.”

“We take patient care very seriously,” said Joey Jarrard, MD, bariatric program partner and also board-certified general and bariatric surgeon at Archbold Memorial Hospital. “This accreditation shows that we aim to provide them with the best care and tools possible to help them achieve a healthier lifestyle.”

The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) estimates about 93 million adults in the United States are affected by obesity and the number continues to increase.

The disease of obesity increases the risk of morbidity and mortality because of the diseases and conditions that commonly associated with it, such as type II diabetes, hypertension, cardiovascular disease and cancer, among other health risks. Metabolic and bariatric surgery has proven to be effective in the reduction of comorbid conditions related to obesity.

“Our Bariatric and Weight Management team has built a high quality, patient centered program that is changing the lives of citizens in the region,” said Perry Mustian, President and CEO of Archbold Medical Center. “We are very proud of them and this achievement.”

Archbold’s Bariatric and Weight Management Program is the only program in the region with two fellowship-trained bariatric surgeons.
