Archbold Offers Free Kidney Screenings in March

Friday, March 13, 2015

Kidney disease is one of the most common diseases in the United States and in Georgia. According to the National Kidney Foundation, one in three American adults are currently at risk for developing kidney disease, and 26 million American adults have kidney disease and don’t know it. The Georgia Medical Care Foundation has estimated that the state’s mortality rate for this disease is 30 to 40 percent higher than the national average, making it the ninth leading cause of death for residents in the United States and in Georgia.

A number of risk factors can compromise your kidney health and could eventually lead to kidney disease. End stage kidney disease is caused by diabetes and hypertension, both modifiable conditions that account for 70 percent of all cases. Family history of kidney disease and personal history of smoking also put you at a greater risk.

Early detection through simple blood and urine tests, as well as treatment under the care of your physician, can slow or prevent the progression of kidney disease. This month, Archbold will host free kidney screenings at the health system’s locations throughout the region.

On March 27, Archbold will host a free kidney screening in Thomasville at the Archbold Nephrology Group practice from 8:30am to 11am.

Screenings will also be held at other locations within Archbold’s health system:

·         March 19 (Cairo)-Archbold-Grady Specialty Clinic located inside Grady General Hospital from 9am to 11am.

·         March 26 (Quitman)-Brooks Medical Associates located at 907 N Court St.  from 9am to 11am.

·         March 26 (Camilla)-Archbold-Mitchell Specialty Clinic located at 259 US Hwy 19 S from 9am to 11am.

The free screenings will include blood pressure, cholesterol and glucose screenings, a renal panel (a blood sample) and a urinalysis. For best results, do not drink sweetened liquids or eat for at least six hours prior to the screening.  Tests and results will be provided free to participants as a clinical outreach effort supporting Archbold’s core value of Community Benefit.  All screenings will be offered on a walk-in basis. No appointment is necessary. For more information on the screening events, call (229) 584-5520.
