What to Expect from the Archbold Pharmacy Residency Program

This residency program builds upon Doctor of Pharmacy education to contribute to the development of clinical pharmacists responsible for medication-related care of patients with a wide range of conditions. Participants of this residency are eligible for postgraduate year two (PGY-2) pharmacy residency training and board certification upon graduation.

Each PGY-1 graduate will:

  • Be responsible for medication-related care of patients with a wide range of conditions
  • Become a competent, confident, and compassionate pharmacy practitioner, who is an active member of the healthcare team
  • Develop an attitude of self-evaluation and improvement
  • Prevent, identify, and resolve medication-related problems and assure safe, effective, and appropriate drug therapy for patients across the continuum of care

During this 12-month program, residents will also be involved in:

  • High-quality, patient-centered care
  • Medication-use policies
  • Leadership and practice management
  • Project management
  • Education of healthcare providers and trainees
  • Medication-related support during medical emergencies

Throughout the course of the program, projects and responsibilities will include the following and more:

  • Evaluations: Residents will work on a quality improvement project with a goal to improve the care delivered to patients at Archbold. They are also expected to complete rotational evaluations and global evaluations in a timely manner.
  • Continuing Education Presentations: Residents will prepare one 60-minute presentation for ACPE credit on approved topics, complete with PowerPoint slides and prepared handouts. Journal Club: Residents are expected to present current journal articles at scheduled times throughout the year.
  • Staffing: Residents gain experience in the pharmacy’s medication distribution system by staffing the main pharmacy during one or two 4-hour weekday evening shifts per week. Residents also staff every third weekend throughout the residency program.
  • Licensure: Residents are expected to obtain Georgia licensure by a specified time in their acceptance packet. The process to become licensed in the state of Georgia begins by requesting the appropriate information from the State Board of Pharmacy. Upon graduation from the program, residents will take the Georgia version of the Multistate Pharmacy Jurisprudence Exam (MPJE), as well as the Georgia Practical Exam.
