We have received questions about why positive COVID-19 results reported by Archbold each day do not appear to be consistent with data reported by the State Department of Public Health. We are reporting results for patients in Archbold facilities and results reported through our lab. We are not reporting data by county of residence, which is how the state reports data for public health purposes. We are also not the only potential source of testing results within our service area counties, which reinforces the need to rely on the Department of Public Health for data by county of residence. We believe our data and data from the Georgia DPH both provide useful information for the public.

Recent Developments

Over the next few weeks, Governor Brian P. Kemp will activate and deploy over 100 Guardsmen to any long-term care facility with COVID-19 cases. A group of soldiers began work at Pelham Parkway Nursing Home last night to audit existing sanitation methods, train staff and assist with thoroughly cleaning the facility. More troops will arrive today, with an expected team of 20 to complete the mission. We’re very grateful for this support from Governor Kemp, Representative Darlene Taylor, and for the efforts of the troops working hard during these unprecedented times.

Tuesday, March 31, 2020 Update

We are saddened by the first deaths at Archbold from COVID-19, and our thoughts and prayers are with the families of these patients. From the CEO

Earlier today, Archbold President and CEO Perry Mustian expressed his gratitude to the Archbold healthcare team, particularly our front line caregivers who put it on the line every day: “We applaud you for providing outstanding care and compassion to all patients who enter our healthcare system. We have shifted from preparedness to response mode with a core group of senior leaders working in a command center handling the day-to-day logistics of our response to COVD-19. The decisions we make are designed to both support you and help protect you during this situation. I am confident that Archbold is ready and prepared to manage through this difficult time and I want you to know that we’re here for you, we thank you and God bless the work you do every day.”

Mustian also noted today is National Doctors’ Day: “We would like say a special thank you to our amazing doctors for everything they do for our patients, not only today, but every day. Your commitment to our patients during these unprecedented times is much appreciated. Thank you for your sacrifice, your compassion and your willingness to serve. And thank you for being a part of the Archbold family. You are healthcare heroes.”

Service Changes
  • Archbold is further restricting emergency department visitors; no visitors will be allowed unless they are the guardian of a minor or it is an end of life situation.
  • Archbold is beginning to receive hand-sewn procedure masks back from different community volunteer teams. Production will continue to increase each day. Also, 3D-printed face shield production will begin today courtesy of a local technology group. Archbold continues to receive inquiries from people across the communities we serve asking how they can help Archbold during the COVID-19 pandemic, and is thankful for the outpouring of support. To better capture those inquiries, Archbold has established a contact line for members of the community—those interested in helping can call the Archbold Foundation at 228-2924.
  • Clarification of information on COVID-19 drive-through screening site: site is now operational, Monday-Friday, 9am-430pm. The site is located at 2705-D East Pinetree Blvd (old One Blood office), but patients will now drive through for screening behind the building, entering the screening line off of Pinetree near Sonic. A clinician will approach the vehicle and perform the screening swab while the patient remains in their vehicle. Specimen collection will continue to be by physician referral only and will only be conducted for patients that are displaying symptoms of a COVID-19 infection (fever, cough, new onset shortness of breath). This screening site is not intended for patients who are showing no symptoms (asymptomatic) or think they have been in contact with someone who they think is positive. If you have any questions regarding the new drive-through screening site, please call your doctor.
    • Drive-through directions for patients:
      • Enter the drive through line via the Pinetree Blvd entrance near Sonic
      • After entering the parking lot, follow the directional signage leading to the back of the building.
      • Wait in line until asked to drive up to the next available clinician that will perform the specimen collection. Do not exit the vehicle at any time. The clinician will come to the vehicle and perform the specimen collection.
      • After the specimen collection is completed, follow the Exit signs located throughout the complex and exit the complex via Remington Avenue.

it’s critical we uphold these laws.

We’ve received many questions from individuals wanting to know patient information concerning gender, age and other personal information we cannot share because of federal patient privacy laws. It’s important we help those in the community know that although we understand their concerns, it’s critical we uphold these laws.

employee/visitor policy changes

Effective today, we are not allowing restaurant food delivery to Archbold facilities until further notice.

Monday, March 23, 2020 Update

As we now have confirmed COVID-19 positive patients in Thomas County, many understandably have asked different detailed questions about those individuals. To expand on the information we released yesterday, new information is shown below.

As of noon Monday, March 23, the COVID-19 tests reported to Archbold facilities are listed below. Tests not sent through the Archbold system are not represented.

  • Total Positive Results – 4
  • Total Negative Results – 28
  • Total Deaths – 0
  • Archbold Memorial Hospital Total Positive Inpatients – 3
  • Archbold Memorial Hospital Total Inpatients Awaiting Test Results – 10
  • Brooks County Hospital Total Positive Inpatients – 0

  • Grady General Hospital Total Positive Inpatients – 0
  • Grady General Hospital Total Inpatients Awaiting Test Results – 7
  • Mitchell County Hospital Total Positive Inpatients – 0
  • Mitchell County Hospital Total Inpatients Awaiting Test Results – 8
  • Archbold Pinetree Screening Site Total Positive Patients – 0
  • Archbold Pinetree Screening Site Total Negative Results – 8
  • Archbold Pinetree Screening Site Total Awaiting Test Results* - 41

*Patients awaiting results from an outpatient site, will be notified by their primary care provider when results are available

The reason we show four total positives and three inpatients with no deaths is due to the fact that one patient with a positive test result is an outpatient whose test came through the Archbold system. We are reporting aggregate numbers of total positive results, total negative results and total deaths for any test that comes through the Archbold system.

We also need to explain that many of the questions we’ve received are concerning gender, age and other personal information we cannot share because of federal patient privacy laws. It’s important that the citizens of our community know that although we understand their concerns, it’s critical we uphold these laws.

Service Changes

Effective immediately, the Archbold Home Care Store will be curbside service only. Patients can drive to the front of the store and a staff member will come out and meet them. For CPAP supplies or oxygen tank refills, patients should call 229-228-5886 to place orders. A store representative will call when the order is available to pick up. In addition, Archbold Pinetree Pharmacy is now drive-through only.

We are discontinuing elective services until further notice. Patients with scheduled procedures will be individually notified if their appointment needs to be postponed. Only medically urgent or emergent procedures and services will continue.

Visitor Policy Changes

Today we began temporarily suspending visitation at all Archbold facilities, with very limited exceptions. If we have a confirmed COVID-19, inpatient, no visitation of that patient will be allowed.

Sunday, March 22, 2020 Update

Archbold Memorial Hospital has received the first COVID-19 positive test results. Two positive results were received and both patients are currently hospitalized at Archbold. At this time, we would like to reiterate the necessity to methodically follow the guidance from the CDC to practice social distancing, good hand hygiene and cough/sneeze etiquette. Adherence to these practices is the best way to reduce the chance of contracting and spreading the virus.

Friday, March 20, 2020 Update

Screening Information
  • We have had no positive COVID-19 test results at the hospital or from the screening site, but we are still waiting on test results. It’s important to note that the lab specimens we’re sending for analysis go to large national laboratories that are severely backlogged and it’s taking much longer than normal to receive results. We currently have eight inpatients pending results.
  • Please note that the Pinetree Pharmacy drive-through pick up lane is not a part of the COVID-19 screening site.
Visitor Policy Changes

As noted in yesterday’s update, we are taking extra precautions by temporarily suspending visitation at all Archbold facilities, with very limited exceptions, beginning Monday, March 23. If we have a confirmed COVID-19 inpatient, no visitation of that patient will be allowed. Exceptions to the visitation policy were noted in yesterday’s update as seen below and on signage throughout the Archbold campus.

Employee Policy Changes

No changes since 03/17/20 update.

Thursday, March 19, 2020 Update

Screening Information
  • We have had no positive COVID-19 test results at the hospital or from the screening site, but we are still waiting on test results. We currently have nine inpatients pending results. It is important to note that in our health system with multiple locations, the number of people being screened can change frequently. For this reason, we will only report the number of people with positive COVID-19 test results.
Visitor Policy Changes

As we continue our preparedness measures, we are taking extra precautions by temporarily suspending visitation at all Archbold facilities, with very limited exceptions, beginning Monday, March 23. If we have a confirmed COVID-19, inpatient, no visitation of that patient will be allowed.

Exceptions to the visitation policy will require a guest sticker obtained from the main entrance and will only be allowed in the following situations:

  • Obstetric patients may have one visitor
  • Patients who are at the end-of-life may have two visitors at a time
  • Patients with behavioral conditions for whom a family member is key to their care, may have one visitor
  • Patients who have altered mental status or developmental delays (where caregiver provides safety) may have one visitor
  • Minors under age 18 may have one parent or guardian
  • Patients undergoing urgent/emergent surgery or procedures may have one visitor who must leave the hospital as soon as possible after the procedure/surgery
  • Patients in the emergency department may have one visitor, who remains in the room at all times
  • If a physician has ordered an outpatient test, please don’t bring a visitor unless necessary
Additional Changes

The Auxiliary Gift Shop will be closing Monday, March 23, until further notice. We have also discontinued flower delivery until further notice.

WHAT IS ARCHBOLD DOING IN RESPONSE TO COVID-19?
  • Multidisciplinary teams are actively engaged and have implemented patient screening processes, plans for care of COVID-19 patients, training updates for staff, limiting visitors as appropriate, and communicating internally and externally.
  • We are following our existing policies and plans for infectious disease and emergency management, and the core approach to our response to this virus is the application of our existing infection control practices and use of personal protective equipment (PPE) by staff, with modifications as needed to reflect the scope of the possible spread of the virus.
  • We are using www.archbold.org, Archbold’s Medical Center Facebook page (and other social media platforms), digital billboards, and the Times Enterprise as well as the Cairo Messenger, Camilla Enterprise/Pelham Journal and the Quitman Free Press to keep the communities we serve updated.

Please call 228-CARE with questions about COVID-19.

If you are experiencing COVID-19 symptoms (fever, cough, shortness of breath), please contact your physician before visiting an emergency room, hospital or urgent care center.
