Archbold Recognizes National Preparedness Month

September is recognized as National Preparedness Month, a time dedicated to raising awareness about the importance of preparedness during disasters and emergencies.

“This month serves as a reminder for families and individuals to take proactive steps to safeguard themselves,” said Chuck Winchester, emergency management coordinator at Archbold.

Being prepared can mean the difference between chaos and order when an emergency arrives. Emergency preparedness involves understanding various risks, having a plan in place and ensuring that you and your family are well-prepared to respond to any situation effectively.

“Preparedness empowers individuals, fosters resilience and promotes peace of mind,” said Winchester.

There are five key areas to focus on when it comes to emergency preparedness:

  1. Risk Assessment: Understand the specific risks in your area. Are you in a flood zone? Do you live in an area prone to hurricanes? Knowing these risks allows you to tailor your preparedness plan effectively.

  2. Create an Emergency Plan: A comprehensive plan should outline what your family will do in the event of an emergency. It should include:
    • Communication strategies
    • Meeting places
    • Evacuation routes and procedures
    • Emergency contact information

  3. Building an Emergency Kit: Having an emergency kit with essential supplies can greatly aid in survival during disasters. Basic items to include are:
    • Non-perishable food and water
    • First-aid supplies
    • Flashlights and batteries
    • Whistle
    • Personal hygiene items
    • Important documents stored in a waterproof container

  4. Family Involvement: Engaging all family members in the preparedness process can be beneficial. Conducting emergency drills, discussing the plan and ensuring everyone knows what to do can improve overall readiness.

  5. Community Engagement: Participate in local preparedness programs or events. Community education can provide valuable resources and support in times of crisis.

“Preparedness is an ongoing effort,” said Winchester. “It’s not just a once-a-year activity, but a continual process that involves regular updates to your plan and kit, community engagement and staying informed about potential risks.”
