How to Support a Loved One Undergoing Weight-Loss Surgery: A Guide for Friends and Family

Weight-loss surgery is a powerful, transformative journey - one that can give patients the tools they need to reclaim their health and well-being. However, it can also come with its share of physical and emotional hurdles.

As friends and family members, you play a key role in supporting your loved one during surgery and as they adjust to new habits and challenges afterward. Here's how you can be there for your loved one every step of the way.

1. Understand the Journey Ahead

The first step in supporting your loved one is understanding the journey they're about to undertake. Bariatric surgery isn't just a one-time event; it's a life-changing commitment that requires patience, persistence, and, often, a complete lifestyle overhaul.

"Weight-loss surgery is not a quick fix; it's a lifelong commitment," explains Dr. Mary K. Hanisee, bariatric surgeon and the medical director for Archbold's Bariatric Surgery and Weight Loss Management Program in Thomasville, Georgia. "It's important to understand that your loved one is embarking on a challenging but rewarding path- having supportive family and friends can make a world of difference."

Dr. Hanisee recommends learning about the surgery itself, what the recovery process entails, and the lifestyle changes that come afterward.

"The more informed you are, the better equipped you'll be to offer relevant support to your loved one," she says.

2. Provide Emotional Encouragement

Your loved one may feel a mix of excitement and anxiety leading up to surgery, and it's important to be mindful of their emotional needs. For many, weight-loss surgery brings up sensitive emotions and can sometimes lead to feelings of vulnerability.

"Offering genuine emotional support can be as simple as listening without judgment," says Dr. Hanisee. "Be there to acknowledge their concerns, celebrate their progress, and remind them of the goals they've set for themselves."

Create a judgment-free space where your loved one feels safe sharing their thoughts and feelings. Offering encouraging words and validating their experience can go a long way in boosting their confidence and determination.

3. Help Create a Post-Surgery Game Plan

After weight loss surgery, your loved one will need to adapt to a new diet, new exercise routines, and potentially new ways of coping with stress. Supporting them through these changes can be invaluable.

"Family members can help by learning about the new dietary needs and exercise guidelines," Dr. Hanisee suggests. "Planning meals together or setting up family walks are great ways to show support and foster healthy habits."

Help your loved one create a realistic post-surgery plan, including preparing healthy meals, managing medications, and keeping track of their follow-up appointments. Many patients find it helpful to have an accountability partner for staying active and tracking progress, so consider taking on this role if it's something you're both comfortable with.

4. Celebrate the Small Victories

The road to weight loss and improved health is filled with milestones, both big and small. Celebrate these achievements with your loved one, whether it's their first 5-pound loss, a successful doctor's visit, or simply sticking to their new routines. Recognizing progress can reinforce their motivation and bring joy to the journey.

"Acknowledging milestones, no matter how small, helps patients feel supported and seen," says Dr. Hanisee. "A heartfelt 'I'm proud of you' can sometimes mean more than you realize."

Find meaningful ways to commemorate their achievements - write them a heartfelt note, plan a small gathering, or simply take a moment to tell them you're proud of their hard work.

5. Be Patient Through the Holiday Season

The holiday season can be particularly challenging for patients adjusting to a new lifestyle. There are often temptations at every gathering, and they may feel pressure to explain their new habits to family and friends. Help ease this season by being mindful of their boundaries and offering support.

"For many patients, the holidays can be overwhelming," Dr. Hanisee explains. "Help them prepare by discussing family gatherings, meals, and expectations in advance. Encourage them to make choices that align with their goals and reassure them that saying no to certain foods or traditions is okay."

If you're hosting a holiday gathering, consider preparing a few bariatric-friendly dishes so they can enjoy the celebration without worry.

6. Keep the Long-Term Goal in Sight

As your loved one progresses, there may be moments of doubt, frustration, or even setbacks. Remind them that this is all part of the process. Weight-loss surgery is a journey with ups and downs, and maintaining a positive, patient attitude can make the path forward smoother for everyone involved.

"This journey isn't a sprint; it's a marathon," shares Dr. Hanisee. "Remind your loved one to focus on their long-term health and why they chose to change. Having a positive support system helps them stay focused on those goals."

A Lasting Support System for Your Loved One

Supporting someone through weight-loss surgery isn't just about physical assistance; it's about being their cheerleader, their confidant, and a source of positivity. Each step you take to understand their journey, provide encouragement, and celebrate their successes strengthens the foundation of trust and love they can lean on. With your help, your loved one can step confidently into a healthier, happier life.
