Traveling While in Treatment: Tips for the Holidays

The holiday season brings the warmth of family, the joy of tradition, and the anticipation of cherished moments with family and loved ones. But for those undergoing cancer treatment, the thought of traveling during this busy time can be daunting. With thoughtful preparation and guidance from medical experts, it's entirely possible to embrace the season while prioritizing your health.
Dr. Chisom Onuoha, a medical oncologist at the Archbold Cancer Center in Thomasville, Georgia, offers valuable advice to help you travel with confidence and focus on what matters most- spending time with loved ones and creating lasting memories.
1. Consult Your Care Team Before Making Plans
Before booking plane tickets or hitting the road, you must talk with your oncologist or care team about your travel plans. They can provide tailored advice based on your treatment plan and current health status.
"Your care team is your greatest resource," says Dr. Onuoha. "We can help you determine if travel is safe, suggest timing adjustments for treatments, and provide necessary medical documentation or medications for your trip."
2. Plan for Comfort During Travel
Fatigue and side effects can be challenging while traveling, but there are ways to mitigate discomfort. Consider packing a small travel bag with essentials like medications, a blanket, snacks, and necessary medical supplies to keep yourself comfortable during the journey.
"If you're flying, request priority boarding and try to book non-stop flights to minimize travel time," advises Dr. Onuoha. "For road trips, plan for frequent breaks to stretch your legs and remember to stay hydrated."
3. Stay on Top of Medications
Sticking to your medication schedule is critical, especially if your travel itinerary involves crossing time zones.
"Set alarms on your phone as reminders to take medications, and always carry your prescriptions in your carry-on bag if flying," Dr. Onuoha recommends. "This ensures they're accessible and safe, even if your checked luggage is delayed."
Your oncologist will also provide medications to help manage nausea, pain, or other side effects that may arise during travel.
4. Protect Your Immune System
For patients in treatment, protecting your immune system is a top priority. Crowded airports, train stations and holiday gatherings can expose you to germs that are harmful to your already compromised immune system.
"Wear a well-fitting mask, use hand sanitizer frequently, and try to avoid touching your face," Dr. Onuoha suggests. "If loved ones are visiting you, kindly ask them to stay home if they feel unwell."
Choosing accommodations with private spaces and limiting exposure to large crowds can also help safeguard your health.
5. Stick to Your Treatment Schedule
Long-distance travel may interfere with your treatment schedule, so plan ahead to stay on track.
"If you're traveling out of town for an extended period of time, let your care team know well in advance," says Dr. Onuoha. "We can often coordinate care with a local oncology center if necessary or adjust your treatment plan to accommodate your trip."
6. Listen to Your Body
Holiday travel can be exhausting for anyone, but cancer treatment adds an extra layer of physical and emotional fatigue. Communicate your energy levels with loved ones so they understand your needs and can support you throughout your journey.
"Rest when you need to, even if it means skipping an event or activity," Dr. Onuoha emphasizes. "Your health and well-being should always come first."
7. Embrace the Joy of the Season
Despite the challenges, traveling during the holidays can be an opportunity to create meaningful memories. With careful planning and support from your care team, it's possible to celebrate with loved ones while prioritizing your health.
"As a medical oncologist, I encourage my patients to focus on what brings them joy and connection," says Dr. Onuoha. "Whether it's gathering with family or simply experiencing the holiday spirit, these moments of happiness can be incredibly healing."
