Routine Screenings for Lung Cancer: Why, When, and How to Stay Ahead

Lung cancer affects thousands each year, but screenings can make a real difference. Detecting lung cancer early is essential, especially for those at higher risk. Routine screenings are essential for detecting lung cancer early, especially for those at higher risk. At Archbold, we're committed to providing accessible, top-tier care with our Low-Dose CT lung cancer screenings available at our Ambulatory Care Center in Thomasville, Archbold Mitchell in Camilla, and Archbold Grady in Cairo. Here's a breakdown of who should consider getting screened, what's involved, and why early detection is key.

Who's At Risk for Lung Cancer?

Certain lifestyle factors and personal history can increase the risk of lung cancer. However, a history of smoking remains the most significant risk factor. People who have smoked heavily over many years, or who continue to smoke, are at greater risk. Even former smokers need to remain vigilant, as their risk persists years after quitting.

Other risk factors for lung cancer include:

  • Exposure to secondhand smoke
  • Exposure to radon gas
  • Family history of lung cancer
  • Exposure to workplace carcinogens, such as asbestos or certain chemicals

"If you're a smoker or former smoker over the age of 50, a lung screening can be one of the most important health decisions you make. The earlier we catch it, the better the chances of effective treatment," explains Dr. Ed Hall, general surgeon with Archbold South Georgia Surgical

Why Lung Cancer Screenings Are Essential

Lung cancer often doesn't show symptoms in its early stages, making it difficult to catch without routine screenings. For those at high risk, screenings can reveal cancer at an early stage, when it's most treatable. Lung cancer screening isn't for everyone, but if you're at higher risk, your doctor may recommend one.

"Screenings give us a chance to find cancer before it has a chance to grow or spread. Catching it early can make a world of difference," says Dr. Hall.

Low-Dose CT (LDCT) Lung Cancer Screenings: What They Are

A Low-Dose CT (LDCT) scan is a special type of X-ray that captures detailed images of the lungs. Unlike traditional X-rays, LDCT provides more information and allows doctors to detect smaller nodules that may indicate early lung cancer. LDFT uses minimal radiation and is painless and quick, with each scan taking just a few minutes.

"LDCT is an excellent tool because it lets us see smaller, subtle signs of cancer that might otherwise be missed. The low-dose factor also makes it a safer option for regular screenings," Dr. Hall explains.

Why Archbold Offers Low-Dose CT Lung Cancer Screenings

Archbold is proud to offer LDCT lung cancer screenings because we understand the importance of early detection in improving outcomes. By catching lung cancer early, patients have more treatment options and better chances for recovery. Our screenings provide accurate, reliable information without unnecessary radiation exposure, and they're performed by our highly trained team using advanced imaging technology.

"Our team at Archbold is dedicated to treating cancer and catching it early, so we can offer patients the best possible outlook. These screenings are just one more way we're putting our patients first," says Dr. Hall.

Who Should Get a Low-Dose CT Lung Cancer Screening at Archbold?

LDCT lung cancer screenings aren't for everyone, but they're highly recommended for individuals who meet the following criteria:

  • Adults ages 50-80

  • Those with significant smoking history, an average of one pack of cigarettes per day for 20 years or more

  • Current smokers or those who have quit within the last 15 years

If you meet these criteria, it may be time to consider an LDCT lung cancer screening. Archbold offers LDCT screenings conveniently at our Ambulatory Care Center in Thomasville, as well as at Archbold Mitchell in Camilla and Archbold Grady in Cairo, so you can get the care you need close to home.

"Lung cancer screening is not a one-size-fits-all approach. It's best for individuals with a significant risk profile, like heavy smokers. If that's you, talk to your doctor and see if an LDCT screening could be right for you," says Dr. Hall.

What Happens if Lung Cancer is Detected?

If lung cancer is detected during a low-dose CT lung cancer screening, it's normal to feel overwhelmed- but you're not alone. At Archbold, our patient navigator is here to guide you every step of the way.

Archbold's lung nodule navigator, Brittni Pannell, RN, is a specially trained medical professional who supports patients from the moment of diagnosis through each stage of treatment.

"My job as the patient navigator is to simplify a complex process and offer personalized guidance," says Brittni. "Whether it's arranging follow-up tests, connecting you with specialists, or simply being a reassuring presence, I'm here to ensure no patient faces this journey alone."

From explaining treatment options to connecting patients with resources, Brittni ensures each patient receives timely, compassionate support and comprehensive information about every decision they will face along the way.

Dr. Hall would also like to note that Archbold is home to minimally invasive treatment options for lung cancer.
