Don’t Give Up on Your New Year’s Resolutions

It’s that time again when people begin new workout regimens, rid their cabinets of junk food and embark on a frenzy of decluttering. Each new year offers a fresh start that gets us excited about improving our lives, yet approximately 80% of people give up on their New Year’s resolutions by February, according to U.S. News & World Report.
As the excitement of the new year wears off, lack of motivation could be the reason, but there are some steps you can take to stay on track. Here are some suggestions for staying motivated:
- Celebrate small successes. Sometimes the end goal seems too far in the future. Celebrate the small wins, because small successes lead to bigger results.
- Practice patience. Remember that behavior changes don’t happen right away. Staying consistent will help you achieve your goals.
- Reach out for support. Finding a partner who is willing to support you will make it easier to reach your goals.
- Recommit. Recognize that because you’re creating a new habit, it can be easy to stray from your goal. If you slip up, forgive yourself and pledge to get back on track.
- Reward yourself. It can help you stay on track if you have something to look forward to when you achieve your goal.
Great Expectations
One reason it can be difficult to achieve your New Year’s resolutions is that those resolutions were too difficult or unrealistic to start with. If you’re looking to make a change, here are some goal-setting tips that can help set you up for success:
- Make it meaningful. You are more likely to achieve a goal if it’s important to you or related to something you enjoy.
- Be specific. Defining your goal, such as committing to a 15-minute walk every day, can make it easier for you to accomplish.
- Be realistic. Be honest with yourself about what you can reasonably accomplish, rather than trying to think big.
- Set a deadline. Deadlines can help you stay accountable and focused.
